Observation #9: Running Record
Background: Nico
(age 3) and Neve (age 5). Two siblings. Babysitting at their home in Holderness
4:00 PM, December 11th.
Intensive Observation:
Nico is eating cheddar bunnies and Neve is working on a puzzle. Neve is
interested in what is going on and comes over to check out the computer. She shows me how she writes using a paper and
pencil. She then says she doesn’t like typing. She types: neve abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz. While singing “now I know my ABC’s”
and types again, no. She is getting
bored with the typing and asks to play hide and seek. Nico has run to the other
room to put on his Batman cape and returns with a Sharpie and paper. Neve tells
him no, those are permanent and goes to get more paper and washable markers. A
dog barks at the front door and Nico gets up to let in Carl, the family dog. He
is struggling with the door, and says “I can do it” and is unable to get it, so
he asks for help when he realizes he cannot. I get up to let the dog in and the
kids continues coloring. Neve is coloring a princess and Nico is coloring a
house. Neve claims she has the prettiest color but Nico disagrees saying his
yellow is prettier. Neve says “more typy” and wants to do more typing. This is
what she says: hghgxxsjhfkjrkifkkdjgbjit5iiolu8igtu6776tetafatrqagfcfq fgaqfxsgfdfgdfgngdgdghghhjfhjdbuwqkjqrtdhgsbnfmvc

“there all done” She is ready for a snack and Nico agrees. Neve said she has
gone to Pepe’s college and says she had a good time and she likes my school.
Neve wants to go outside but Nico would prefer to stay inside. Neve looks at
her puzzle of Frozen characters and names them all, and then looks at Spiderman
puzzle and names them all as well. She notices there are different characters
in Frozen but only Spiderman is in that show. She says “Nevy do more typy” and
wants to type again. Cwsssggdgdgteyysssdyjswsrushrkh;pdsyueyayeyusttyasstatstysaytdyedyadetafcedfvsgcafszfgddgedgefxddgfdfvfgdvfrdhg.
“All done” and asks “what does it spell?” She says it is scribbling and
then thinks my words say “Dear Neve I hope you have a great holiday. Love,
Delaney” She wants to play horsey ride and climbs onto my back. She is making
horse sounds and talking about the visit to the horse barn today feeding and petting
the horses. Nico is still coloring, but this time in a coloring book. Neve is
mixing colors: blue and yellow makes green. Then she is drawing stars while
Nico is eating yogurt. Nico has yogurt spilled all over him and reaches for the
towel to clean up. Neve interrupts, “excuse me I need to go poop” and runs to
the bathroom while Nico chases after her. He comes back with a book, and
proudly presents it to me. Nico then runs away again and brings back a floor puzzle.
Neve returns with a Ty: Beanie Baby tag and asks me to read it for her. Neve
goes to her room to get a new game: Monster Bowling and asks me to play. I tell
her I am almost done and she says, “YAY, then we can play!” She hugs me and
says, “I like you”.

® Can only focus on one task for a short
period of time (typical)
® Likes attention (typical)
® Likes to be the “boss” of her younger
brother (typical)
® Interest in what adults are doing

® Lots of running back and forth (typical)
® Wants to be like his older sister

Professional Reflection:
I chose the running record method of observation because I
believed it to be the best way to capture what happened in the time period
observed. The children observed were very typical- and a lot of fun to interact
with. A professional in this field may choose to use this method because it is
easy to make notes, and get the full picture of what is going on.
