Observation Three

Observation #3: Breakfast Club

Context/Background
5 teenagers in library for detention:

- pink shirt, reddish hair girl
- long haired boy in plaid behind her
- dark blonde boy in blue next to her
- girl in black at way back of room
- blonde boy in front in green. 

Intensive Observation

The kids are seated at a table in a library. The girl in pink shirt has sushi for lunch in a very fancy bag. The boy in plaid is leaning back on his chair making jokes at her and asking what her food is. He throws the girl in the back a Coke and she catches it without looking up. The plaid boy gives a disgusted look upon the mention of raw fish and turns his attention to the other boy's food. The boy in blue is pulling out many sandwiches and a large assortment of food out of a paper bag. The girl in black is sucking spilled soda off of the table, and the kids turn to look. She pulls apart her sandwich and throws the bologna across the room where it lands on the wall. She dumps Pixie Stix onto the bread and takes a sip of coke before proceeding to pour cereal onto the sandwich. All of the kids are now staring at her. She takes a bite, crunching hard and stares back at the kids. They all slowly turn away.The boy in plaid goes up to the front of the room where the blond in green is sitting. He sits down and says, "what are we having?' He opens up the lunch bag and pulls out food, and when the boy in green tries to reach for it, he slaps his hand down. He makes a joke at him and then stands up to further make fun of him, acting out what he thinks an average day is for Brian. 

Reflection/Comments

Cliques: There are five different kids in this video, each representing a different clique: jock, nerd/mama's boy, weirdo, preppy &  punk. This is fairly typical for high schoolers.

Behavior: Their behavior is also typical. The preppy girl is very much proper, laying out her fancy lunch and eating slowly. The punk acts like a jerk and leader, walking around the different tables, taking food and making fun of the other kids. The jock doesn't show much emotion- or smarts for that matter- and eats an awful lot. The mama's boy doesn't stand up for himself and is quiet. The girl in black has very atypical, strange behavior that does not conform to high school standards.

Clothing: The clothing that is worn by the charcters are also associated with the cliques they belong to. The girl in black has a strange sense of style, where the preppy girl is very fancy and proper. The jock and punk (with a chain!) have a more relaxed style of dress where the nerd has a tight polo on. These are also typical.
